Nominated By: Dr. Sarena Fuller
It is my pleasure to nominate Ian Canary-King for the Rock Star Teacher Award. I have worked with Ian for the past six years and can say without hesitation that he is one of the most engaging and thoughtful teachers I have had the opportunity to observe. Ian teaches 7th and 8th-grade social studies, and he has an exceptional ability to bring history and civic life to life for middle school students.
Even students who believe they are not particularly interested in history quickly find themselves drawn into Ian’s classroom. He grounds his teaching in current events and begins many lessons with a compelling hook that sparks curiosity and invites students to think critically about the world around them. Ian understands that middle school students have a natural desire to share their perspectives, and he skillfully channels that energy into structured discussions and debates. At the same time, he ensures that students are building their opinions on a foundation of historical knowledge and factual evidence.
One of Ian’s greatest strengths is his ability to balance clear, concise instruction with meaningful student engagement. He prepares multimedia presentations for nearly every lesson so that his lectures are paired with strong visuals and carefully organized information. His instruction provides just enough context to get students thinking before launching them into activities that require them to analyze, collaborate, and apply what they have learned. When observing Ian’s classroom, I am consistently struck by how effectively he transitions between whole-group instruction and student-centered learning while maintaining high levels of engagement.
Ian is also an exceptional teacher of writing and research skills. Former students frequently report that the analytical writing expectations in his class prepared them well for the demands of high school and beyond. Ian maintains high standards for student work while thoughtfully scaffolding the research and writing process. He provides detailed feedback on drafts and collaborates closely with exceptional children (EC) and English Language Arts teachers to ensure that assignments both challenge students and provide appropriate supports. Students leave his class not only with stronger historical knowledge but with practical skills in research, citation, paraphrasing, and the responsible use of sources.
Ian’s leadership extends well beyond his classroom. In just his second year on staff, he introduced our school to National History Day and coordinated the program for the entire seventh grade. Through this program, students conduct original historical research around an annual theme and present their work in a school-wide competition and parent showcase. Many of our students have gone on to compete at regional and state levels, and the continued growth of the program reflects Ian’s enthusiasm and commitment to authentic student learning.
Despite a full teaching schedule, Ian is a consistent contributor to school-wide initiatives. He is a respected member of the 7th and 8th grade teaching team and helped implement a study skills course to support seventh graders as they transition into more rigorous academic expectations. He also contributed to the development of a tiered behavior system designed to both reward positive choices and provide meaningful support for students who struggle. In addition, Ian is a valued resource to colleagues in the area of digital teaching and learning and serves on our technology committee.
Ian is also deeply committed to expanding opportunities for students beyond the classroom. He regularly gives his personal time to support students participating in competitions and to accompany groups on educational trips that broaden their experiences and perspectives.
Perhaps the best illustration of Ian’s professionalism—and his sense of humor—can be seen in the way he prepares for days when he must be out of the classroom. Rather than leaving traditional substitute plans, Ian often records himself delivering the lesson in advance, complete with his trademark bow tie, guiding students through the presentation just as if he were there. The substitute simply presses play, and instruction continues seamlessly. Students love these videos, and they reflect Ian’s commitment to ensuring that instructional time is never lost.
Ian combines strong instructional skills, high expectations, and a genuine commitment to his students and colleagues. He models intellectual curiosity, civic responsibility, and respectful dialogue—qualities that make him an extraordinary educator and a truly deserving candidate for the Rock Star Teacher Award.
