Bear Grass Charter School Student Named Player of the Year!

Coby Beck, a rising charter school senior, has been recognized by the North Carolina Baseball Coaches Association (NCBCA) as the 1A State Player of the Year

The NCCA awarded Beck the prestigious title after Bear Grass Charter School finished their season playing in the 1A State Championship series, where they lost their bid for the championship to The North Carolina Leadership Academy. It was the charter school’s first time playing in the N.C. High School Athletic Association state finals.

Beck’s grandfather Jerry Rogerson is a former coach at Bear Grass who played college baseball at Barton College. Rogerson said he started throwing the ball with Coby when he was about four years old.

Beck has his sights set on following his granddad’s footsteps to play college ball. His mom says he has the grades with a 4.087 GPA.

Beck was also named Atlantic 6 Conference Pitcher of the Year and First Team All-Conference. His statistics: Batting average .463; runs batted in 31; on-base percentage .624. In pitching: earned run average 1.53; pitched 36 innings-struck out 64 batters; opposing teams batted only .150 when he was on the mound.
