NC College Connect: A Simpler Path to College for North Carolina Students

For many high school students, the college admissions process can feel overwhelming. Applications, essays, test scores, recommendation letters, deadlines, and questions about whether a college will say “yes” can create unnecessary stress.

North Carolina is making that process easier through NC College Connect, a program designed to provide eligible North Carolina public high school students with a streamlined path to college.

For Fall 2026, the program is expanding access so that all North Carolina public high school seniors who are on track to graduate are eligible to participate, with direct-admission opportunities determined by each student's academic record and program requirements.

What Is NC College Connect?

NC College Connect is a direct-admission program that connects North Carolina public high school students with participating colleges and universities where they already meet admissions requirements.

Instead of starting with a traditional college application, eligible students receive a personalized list of participating institutions where they may be directly admitted. The program can eliminate some of the uncertainty that comes with the traditional admissions process.

Participating institutions include colleges and universities within the UNC System, North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities, and the student's local North Carolina community college.

One of the biggest advantages is that students who accept admission through NC College Connect do not need to complete a traditional application for those institutions. The program is designed to bypass requirements such as essays, test scores, and recommendation letters for the participating schools where the student is directly admitted.

Who Is Eligible?

NC College Connect is available to students attending North Carolina public high schools.

For Fall 2026, students must be in membership at a North Carolina public high school and be on track to graduate. Students must also meet applicable course requirements and any additional requirements established by individual participating institutions.

For direct admission opportunities at additional four-year colleges and universities, students generally need:

  • A weighted GPA of 2.8 or higher
  • A fourth-level mathematics course
  • To be on track to graduate
  • To meet NC College Connect program requirements
  • To meet any additional requirements established by an individual institution

Students with higher GPAs may qualify for direct admission to more participating institutions.

Students in the Occupational Course of Study can also participate as long as they are on track to earn a high school diploma rather than a certificate.

How Does the Process Work?

The process is designed to be straightforward.

Students use their CFNC account to access the NC College Connect portal and view the colleges and universities for which they have been matched. The list is personalized based on the student's academic information and program requirements.

Students should:

  1. Log in to their CFNC account.
  2. Make sure their personal information matches their North Carolina student records.
  3. Review their personalized list of participating colleges and universities.
  4. Complete the short form for each institution where they want to accept their admission.
  5. Follow the institution's instructions for next steps after accepting the offer.

An important reminder for students is that NC College Connect does not limit their college choices. If a school does not appear on their personalized list, students can still apply through the traditional admissions process, provided they meet that institution's requirements.

Why NC College Connect Matters

One of the greatest benefits of NC College Connect is that it can remove some of the uncertainty from the college search and application process.

Instead of wondering, “Will I get accepted?” students can see institutions where they already qualify for direct admission. That can make it easier for students and families to explore their options and make informed decisions about what comes next.

The program can also make college more accessible for students who might otherwise be discouraged by the traditional application process.

For schools and counselors, NC College Connect provides another opportunity to start meaningful conversations with students about college planning, career goals, financial aid, and finding the right postsecondary option.

What Should Students Do Now?

Students should make sure their CFNC account information is accurate. CFNC advises students to verify that information such as their name, birthdate, and North Carolina student number matches the information in the state's student records. A mismatch can result in an “ineligible” message even when a student otherwise appears to meet the requirements.

Students should also continue working toward graduation and completing the courses required for their desired college pathways.

Most importantly, students should remember that receiving a direct-admission opportunity is an opportunity to explore—not a requirement to attend a particular school.

A Resource for Educators and Families

CFNC provides education professionals with a collection of resources to help schools communicate NC College Connect to students and families. These resources include flyers, presentations, social media graphics, email language, FAQs, videos, and materials in Spanish.

Counselors, teachers, administrators, and other educators can use these resources to help students understand the program and navigate the steps required to claim their admission opportunities.

CFNC also provides support through its Resource Center. Students can reach the CFNC Resource Center by phone, text, or online chat for general questions about the program.

The Bottom Line

NC College Connect is changing the way many North Carolina students can approach the college admissions process.

By providing direct-admission opportunities based on students' academic records and program requirements, NC College Connect can make the path to college simpler, more transparent, and less stressful.

For students, the message is simple: explore your options, take advantage of the opportunities available to you, and keep planning for your future.

For parents and educators, the best thing you can do is help students understand their options and take the necessary steps to claim their admission opportunities.
